Trump to Ban Sanctuaries?

In response to the pushback ICE has received in sanctuary locales like Boston and the state ef Massachusetts at large, President Trump told reporters this week he might issue an executive order banning select or perhaps even all anctuariy cities and states. He said on Tuesday:

They’re guarding criminals. They’re taking the rights away from the citizens of the state and the city. And we’re going to be ending sanctuary cities, if we find it necessary to do, in certain major areas, and we may just end the entire thing altogether. Because it’s just a way of protecting criminals and nobody else is benefited by that.

Border czar Tom Homan has conducted a war of words with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu over raids targetting Boston illegals. Homan, as he had promised, took his team to Boston on March 18, where they made 380 arrests, including arrests of members of the MS-13, Tren de Aragua, Trinitarios, and other gangs. A majority of those arrested were “significant” criminals, including child sexual predators. Announcing the arrests on x, Homan wrote:

ICE had to find and arrest these illegal alien rapists because Massachusetts and Boston are sanctuaries that refuse to cooperate with ICE. They would rather release these animals back into the community rather than honor ICE detainers or notify ICE when they are scheduled to be released. These arrests included 6 foreign fugitives, including four who were wanted for murder or to serve a criminal sentence for murder, along with drug traffickers, child sexual predators and numerous other violent public safety threats,

Although the President appears to lack the legal authority to force a jurisdiction’s police  actively to aid federal officials, Trump could likely persuade Boston or other such  sanctuary to cooperate by threatening to withhold aid.
