Trump Suspends Diversity Visa

President Trump has directed the Department of Homeland Security to suspend the diversity visa program. This program selects 55,000 immigrants a year, not on the basis of talents and skills, but on applicants winning a lottery for selection. Supporters of this selection process justify it as a means of making the flow of immigrants more diverse by country of origin.

The president took his action following the arrest of Portuguese national Claudio Manuel Neves Valente for the murder of two students and the wounding of nine other people at Brown University. Valente entered the United States through the lottery. Trump said he wanted “to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program.”

It is not clear that the president has full authority to suspend the program because it was enacted by Congress. Immigration advocacy groups are planning legal action to stop the suspension.
