Trump Suspends Brazil Travel

In the past few months, Brazil has become the third leading country in the world in number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 347,000 confirmed cases so far and 20,013 deaths. As a consequence, President Trump yesterday declared a suspension of travel from Brazil. As of May 28, anyone who has been in Brazil during the 14 days prior to his attempted entry into the U.S. will be denied admittance.

As White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany explained, “Today’s action will help ensure foreign nationals who have been in Brazil do not become a source of additional infections in our country.”

In addition, Brazil has frequently been the source of illegal migrants, not only of Brazilian nationals but also of “extra-continentals” from around the world. Fully 17,900 illegal migrants by way of Brazil were arrested at the southwest border in the last fiscal year.
