Trump Sends Mixed Message

In his State of the Union Address President Trump made a powerful case for the need to stop illegal immigration. He stated that this a “moral duty” and added that “no issue better illustrates the divide between America’s working class and America’s political class. Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards.”

Unfortunately, the president undercut his message for immigration reform by departing from his prepared text and stating that he would like to admit legal immigrants in “the largest numbers ever.” Currently we have the highest sustained level of legal immigration in our history. Previously Trump had called for cuts in legal immigration. He rightly noted that illegal immigration depresses wages and imposes a fiscal burden on taxpayers. Excessive legal immigration does the same thing.
