President Trump promised tariffs against Mexican goods entering the U.S. if Mexico would not assist U.S. efforts to control the border. In response, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, promised to deploy Mexican troops to deter the movement of migrants trying to enter our country illegally. She also said that her country would do more to interdict the flow of drugs across the border.
Trump, in turn, promised to delay the tariffs for one month, to allow time to negotiate a permanent agreement. He also agreed to increase efforts to stop the flow of firearms from the U.S. to Mexico.
Summing up his negotiation with Sheinbaum, Trump stated, “I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our country,”
