In an speech lasting two hours, President Trump addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington on Saturday. In it, he covered a wide range of issues affecting his administration, from Robert Mueller, the Green New Deal, the Democrats, some Republicans (Jeff Sessions, for example), “endless wars” in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Federal Reserve, free speech on campus, and numerous other topics including immigration. About the latter, here are a few excerpts, taken from an unedited automatic transcript.
About the Central American caravans. “Illegal immigration is not compassionate. It’s inhumane, unjust, and cruel. Mothers, when their daughters are getting ready to make that 2000-mile trek through Mexico, give them massive amounts of birth control pills, because they know their daughters are going to be raped on the way. Told to me by the Border Patrol. If you look at those caravans, you have stone cold killers. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. You think they are giving us their best and their finest? No, no, no, no. They give us some bad people, people with long crime records, people with tremendous violence, murderers, killers, drug dealers, human traffickers. Border Patrol recently reported apprehending 7000 unlawful migrants in a single week, on just one part of the Texas border. Our immigration system is stretched beyond breaking point. To confront this national security crisis, last month, I declared a national emergency.
About his emergency declaration: “Many emergency declarations have been used to protect people in faraway nations and distant lands. Now we are protecting finally our people. We are being invaded. We’re being invaded by drugs, by people, by criminals, and we have to stop it.”
About sanctuary cities, catch and release. “This includes shutting down sanctuary cities. And we want to end catch and release. We catch them, we realize they are criminal, and we have to release them. They come onto our land, they put one foot on our land, we now have to take them to a massive court trial. Who does this? Other countries, they get the hell out of here, [but] we have to take them through court. Do you know how many judges you need to do this? We have nine hunded thousand people backlogged. That’s the good news. The bad news is no one shows up. Three percent of the people come back for a trial. It’s insane. It’s not my fault I inherited this, but we are fixing it. We have to end chain migration. and we have to cancel the visa lottery.”
About birthright citizenship. “We have people pouring in from not just the southern border in Mexico [but] through China. They have a baby on our land, the baby is a citizen. Then the parents come in with the baby. This is, like, crazy. They used to call it ‘anchor babies’ but they don’t use that anymore because it doesn’t sound nice.”
About anti-American congressmen. “We have people in Congress right now that hate our country…[H]ow did they do in their country? Did they do well?… Some will say it’s terrible [I] brought that up, but I don’t mind.”
