The Trump Administration is ending Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) for 839 Librarians who have been in the U.S. for almost 20 years. The program is supposed to give temporary legal status in the U.S. to people fleeing war, natural catastrophes, and other significant problems. But critics note that the beneficiaries of this program and a similar program, Temporary Protected Status, seldom if ever go home even after conditions have improved in their countries of origin.
President Trump noted that “Liberia is no longer experiencing armed conflict and has made significant progress in restoring stability and democratic governance. Liberia has also concluded reconstruction from prior conflicts, which has contributed significantly to an environment that is able to handle adequately the return of its nationals.”
