Trump Backtracks

Presidential candidate Donald Trump stated recently that all foreigners who graduate from a U.S. college should receive a green card, which provides permanent residence and the opportunity to obtain citizenship. Trump made his statement to a group of investors who seemed to favor this idea.

His statement immediately caused a backlash among supporters who pointed out that such a policy would lure foreigners, many without any particular talents, to U.S. colleges. After graduation they would compete with Americans for jobs. The uproar forced the Trump campaign to issue a new statement: “[W]e ought to keep the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America . . . who would never undercut American wages or workers.”

In the past Trump has generally endorsed immigration restriction and support for American workers. Unfortunately, he’s had a tendency to veer from that path with shoot-from-the-lip statements that indicate a lack of forethought. His supporters will have to keep a watchful eye on him.
