As reported yesterday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had promised to investigate how Harjinder Singh, an illegal alien from India, obtained a commercial driver’s license (CDL) without being able to understand English or read road signs. Singh then went on to cause the deaths of three citizens in Florida. This morning, Secretary Duffy announced that the federal government will “revoke federal funding for California, New Mexico, and Washington if they do not fully enforce English language proficiency for commercial drivers within 30 days.”
Of the named states, both California and Washington granted the driver a CDL, and the state of New Mexico, although he had been cited for speeding in the state, nevertheless allowed him to continue on to Florida, where the accident occurred.
If the states fail to comply, California could lose $33 million, and Washington and New Mexico could lose $10.5 million and $7 million, respectively.
