The Lie That Won’t Die

The Quote Below—More Misinformation from the Media

“Candidate Donald Trump had his fellow Republicans in Congress kill a comprehensive bipartisan deal a year ago that they helped write to deprive President Biden of a legislative success. So where is President Donald Trump’s bill to reform a badly in need of reforming immigration system?

“Instead of a wholesale repair of the leaky structure, the White House is rolling out ineffective piecemeal measures that won’t achieve anything. . . .

“When these immigrants call their bluff — and it is a bluff, given the administration’s ultimate inability to force compliance with its current capacity and demonstrated incompetence — then we’re just back where we started, but now with an undocumented population more fearful than before, which is of course a big part of the objective.

“Trump and his aides like Stephen Miller and Tom Homan know they can neither politically nor logistically go and round up immigrants around the country, so they’re relying on the strategy of making life unlivable in an attempt to convince them to leave of their own accord, and stop new folks from coming. . . .

“Last year, after months of negotiations, the Senate came to a bipartisan agreement on immigration reform legislation. We thought it wasn’t a perfect bill for a variety of reasons, but at least it was Congress taking a stab at moving on legislation that would make some changes to the underlying immigration system, something it has barely attempted in recent decades.

“We’re still operating under the same basic framework that was created by the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act signed by Lyndon Johnson 60 years ago. It’s long past time for Congress to tune out the ravings of the MAGA political movement and redraw an immigration system that acknowledges the enormous boon that immigration has been and provides a path to citizenship for those who’ve since followed the rules and made this country their home.” — Trump Has No Real Immigration Fix: Congress Must Rewrite a Broken Series of Laws, Editorial Board, New York Daily News, 3/2/25 [Link]

Fact Check of Above Quote: It seems to be the lie that will never die, the claim that Donald Trump sabotaged a good bipartisan immigration bill simply for his political advantage. That legislation was in fact a pseudo reform, a smokescreen to allow the Biden Administration to continue its open border policies. In an unguarded moment of honesty, even this editorial concedes that “it wasn’t a perfect bill.”

Then the editorialist goes on to lament that the Trump Administration’s actions are making the lives of illegal aliens “fearful” and “unlivable,” conditions which may encourage them to pack up and go back home. Are we to believe that the task of law enforcement is to make the lives of lawbreakers as comfortable as possible? Would the editorialist have a problem with the law inconveniencing American criminals? In any case, one thing to be said for illegals deporting themselves is that saves the taxpayers from having to foot the bill.

The editorial concludes by calling on Congress “tune out the ravings of MAGA” and pass legislation to reward illegal aliens with citizenship for the “enormous boon” they have provided our country. And just what boon might that be, other than to enrich cheap labor profiteers and provide potential ballots for politicians seeking cheap votes? If anything, Congress—and Americans in general—should tune out the ravings of editorialists who seem to esteem illegal foreigners over their fellow citizens.
