The Battle of Fronton Island: TX vs US

Fronton Island is an uninhabited, 170-acre sand bar near the mouth of the Rio Grande, opposite the small town of Fronton, Texas. For many years, smuggling cartels used it as a staging area and weapons stash and occasionally as a setting for gang shootouts. Then, in 2021, Texas governor Greg Abbott ordered the reclaiming of Fronton by clearing vegetation the gangs had used as cover and by the installation of concertina wire. In addition, two land bridges were built from the American side to the island.

Now the Biden/Harris administration is insisting that all the structures added by the state be removed. Governor Abbott has refused, contending that the island belongs to the state, not the federal government. In a Monday letter, Abbott wrote to Biden:

Your open-border policies have allowed an invasion at the southern border and incentivized criminal activity that threatens the lives of Texas law enforcement, soldiers, and citizens. Yet, in the wake of a crisis that it helped create, the federal government has refused to enforce federal laws – even in dangerous areas like Fronton Island.

The governor added on X:

For years, Fronton Island was overrun with violence. Texas secured it against the cartels. The Biden-Harris Admin now demands that Fronton Island return to its prior condition. Today, I told Biden & Harris that Texas will not comply.
