Texas Refuses Refugees

Texas became the first state to opt out of refugee resettlement under the terms offered by an executive order of the Trump Administration. “At this time,” said Governor Greg Abbott, “the state and non-profit organizations have a responsibility to dedicate available resources to those who are already here, including refugees, migrants and the homeless.”

Prior to the executive order, states and localities had no say-so on whether to accept resettlement. Federally-subsidized agencies profit from resettlement, while states and localities have to pick up the tab to provide public services to the refugees.
