Texas Border Force Proposed

Texas lawmakers have introduced legislation, House Bill 20, to create a Border Protection Unit. It would consist of citizens empowered to “arrest, detain, and deter individuals crossing the border illegally including with the use of non-deadly force.”

Members of the force would have immunity “from criminal and civil liability for any actions taken that are authorized.” They would not have authority to make arrests “unless trained and specifically authorized by the governor.”

The proposed law would test the legal limits of how much a state can be involved in immigration law enforcement.
