The new detention centers being added by the Department of Homeland Security to house illegal aliens on their way back home have taken on an alliterative quality. First there was Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz“; then Indiana came along with the “Speedway Slammer.” Now we hear Texas is joining the club with what Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is calling the “Lone-Star Lockup.”
The facility, now under construction at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, will initially house 1,000 inmates, but it will have the capacity to expand to 5,000, which make it — this being Texas — the “largest federal detention center in history.” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said:
The One Big Beautiful Bill has provided historic funding to help us carry out this mandate, especially by securing enough detention capacity to maintain an average daily population of 100,000 illegal aliens and 80,000 new ICE beds.
The facility is scheduled to open next Sunday and will begin doing its part to detain the 60,000 illegal migrants already taken into custody prior to removal, with more on the way.
