Surge at Sea: Two Boatloads of Haitians Arrive in Puerto Rico

Within three days last week, CBP agents in Puerto Rico apprehended two boatloads of Haitian migrants illegally disembarking on U.S. soil. In the first instance, on May 4, 59 Haitians (23 adult females, 35 adult males and 1 male juvenile) disembarked near the town of Rincon, PR. They were transported for “immigration processing and removal” to the Border Patrol’s Ramey Sector station located at the former Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla.

Three days later, on Saturday, May 7, an identical number of Haitians came ashore near Cabo Rojo, about 19 miles south of Rincon. In that instance, 59 Haitians (34 adult males, 22 adult females, 2 accompanied juvenile males, 1 UAC male) and one Dominican woman had traveled from Haiti by way of a makeshift “yola” boat. As with the earlier group, officials said the migrants were transported to the Ramey station for “processing and removal.”
