On Saturday, the crew of a Coast Guard cutter spotted a 25-foot sailboat bobbing in the surf about 54 miles off the California coast. Over-loaded with 16 illegal migrants — all Mexican citizens — the craft was intercepted and the migrants taken into custody.
By the afternoon, all passengers had been turned over to the Border Patrol at Ballast Point, near San Diego.
The USCG has stepped up efforts to intercept sea-going illegals since Present Trump assumed office. Earlier in May, a crew stopped a “panga-style” boat loaded with Russian nationals and migrants from the Dominican Republic about 3 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico. In February, a cutter intercepted an 30-foot sailboat packed with 132 Haitian migrants about 50 miles off the Florida coast.
Illegal traffic has slowed down drastically, but not stopped. Eternal vigilance is the price of national sovereignty.
