Surge at Sea: 900+ Cubans Returned This Month

Since October 1, the beginning of Fiscal Year 2023, nearly one thousand illegal Cuban migrants have been intercepted at sea and returned to their home island. Most recently, over the past weekend, 185 Cubans were returned on Friday, 94 on Saturday, and 40 more on Sunday. At this rate, FY 2023 should outpace last year’s total of 6,182 repatriations.

The number of Cuban migrants interdicted at sea was dwarfed last year, however, by the more than 220,000 encountered on our southern border. Although the old “Wet Foot, Dry Foot” policy, giving Cubans arriving by land a fast track to citizenship, was abolished in 2017, “asylum seekers” coming across the border are generally allowed entrance while their applications are reviewed. Those arriving by sea are returned to Cuba.
