The foreign-born population in the U.S., legal and illegal, continues to skyrocket. That population now stands at 15.8 percent of all people living in the United States, the highest percentage ever recorded in our history.
It has come about because approximately 12 million legal and illegal immigrants entered the U.S. during the past four years, according to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). This surge overwhelmed previous forecasts. Only two years ago, the Census Bureau projected that we wouldn’t reach the foreign-born percentage of 15.8 until 2024.
The numerical total of the U.S. foreign-born population is currently 53.3 million. CIS estimates that 15.4 percent of them are here illegally. Of the new arrivals since 2021, 58 percent (4.9 million) came from Latin America; 12 percent from India (958,000) 8 percent from the Middle East (690,000), and 7 percent from China (621,000).
