Keir Starmer, the prime minister of Britain, has made a name for himself as a supporter of mass immigration, and government favoritism toward people of immigrant stock over indigenous Britons. This two-tier favoritism has prompted critics to all him two-tier Kier.
Thus some were surprised when Starmer announced a crackdown on illegal immigration and a reduction of legal immigration. But they shouldn’t be surprised. Starmer’s action is perfectly consistent with his pro-immigration agenda. His proposal is a ploy to head off gains by the immigration-restrictionist Reform Party of Nigel Farage. Reform is contending in up-coming council elections, and many voters like its message.
This ploy isn’t new in Britain. When Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, a right-wing party was gaining support on a platform of immigration control. Thatcher headed off this challenge by promising a crackdown on immigration. It was a promise she didn’t keep.
