Sessions Embraces ‘Nativist’ Designation

“Nativist” is a slur that immigration advocates often use to demean Americans who believe that our immigration policy should place the interests of American citizens ahead of foreigners who would like to move here. In an article published in Roll Call, Sessions related that he had been called a nativist. His response: “What’s wrong with that? . . . What’s wrong with putting America[ns] first?” The article also quoted a congressional staffer who stated that “It should go without saying that the country exists to serve the interests of its citizens . . . so that fact that we have the [sneering] term ‘nativist’ implies that some people think the citizens shouldn’t have that priority.”
