Pope: “Do As I Say, Not As, You Know. . . .”

The Holy Father Pope Francis took the opportunity yesterday to criticize the US government for finally protecting its own borders. He did so in an open letter to American bishops in which he said, in part:

I have followed closely the major crisis that is taking place in the United States with the initiation of a program of mass deportations. The rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality.

To His Holiness, illegally entering another country is evidently not a crime. He seems to think it’s something that the illegal migrant is entitled to, due to the migrant’s “extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment,” or any other reason he might come up with.

Francis cited the parable of the Good Samaritan in his scolding of America. Since he is such a huge believer in that doctrine, we can assume that Francis is consistent is own attitudes toward the homeless and woebegone.

Not exactly. It turns out Vatican City has some fairly strict laws governing who enters its space. And just recently it announced it would even be tightening its border controls. A new law prescribes a penalty of up to four years in prison for anyone who “enters the territory of Vatican City State with violence, threat, or deception.” A fine of up to 25,000.000 Euros can be levelled in addition. Can a date with the Inquisition Court be far behind?

Francis is great at lecturing. Following his own principles, not so much.
