Harvard/Harris recently did a poll on public attitudes toward illegal immigration and border enforcement. It found that 71 percent believe that illegal immigration is getting worse, while 29 percent believe this problem is improving. Along party lines, 88 percent of Republicans say it’s getting worse, and 12 percent say it’s getting better. Among Democrats, 53 percent say worse, and 47 percent say better.
The poll also asked: “Is our Southern border closed and immigration laws enforced, or is it largely open and laws are unenforced?” Overall, 56 percent selected the “largely open” option and, with 44 percent choosing “closed.” Seventy-eight percent of Republicans chose the “largely open” and 22 percent said “closed.” Thirty-six percent of Democrats said “largely open,” and 64 percent said “closed.”
