Poll: Majority Supports ICE

An Economist/YouGov Poll recently asked respondents “Do you think it should be legal or illegal for Americans to attempt to prevent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from doing its job?” The poll followed the riots in Los Angeles when protestors attempted to stop ICE agents from arresting illegal aliens.

Fifty-two percent said it should be illegal. Twenty-four percent said it should be legal, and 24 percent weren’t sure. Along party lines the results were as follows: Among Republicans, 80 percent said interference should be illegal, and ten percent said legal. Among Democrats, 41 percent endorsed interference, will 24 percent saying it should be illegal.

Obstructing federal law enforcement is against federal law. Section 111 of Title 18 authorizes punishment for anyone who “forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates or interferes” with federal agents doing their jobs. Commonly, the days, illegal alien advocates claim they want to uphold the rule of law and democracy. If that’s the case, they should support enforcement of laws enacted by our elected representatives.

If they don’t like those laws, they can peacefully seek to change them. That’s how democracy works. It is not likely, however, that most Americans will ever buy their agenda of no restrictions on immigration.
