On Constitution Day, 2014: U.S. Constitution R.I.P.?

On September 17, 1787, the Founding Fathers adopted our Constitution, hoping to preserve for future generations the freedoms Americans had won in a long and bloody struggle. They created a government “of laws, not of men,” where even those holding the highest offices in the land must obey the laws. They gave, in the Constitution, the lawmaking power solely to Congress.

The President, under the Constitution, must faithfully execute the laws of the land. In fact, he is the only official required by the Constitution to swear before he takes office that he will “faithfully execute” this office and “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Now, we have, in Barack Obama, a president who will not enforce laws he does not like and acts as if the power to write the laws was vested in him, not Congress.  The same man who earlier in his reign told radical Hispanics demanding an end to deportations of illegals, “I took an oath to uphold the laws on the books.” Now he has apparently decided he can not only refuse to enforce the immigration laws on the books, but unilaterally create a huge amnesty program with work permits, Social Security numbers and other benefits for illegal aliens.

Will the Congress, will the American people, resist?
