HBO talk show host John Oliver recently claimed that “To be very clear, there is no migrant crime wave happening right now.” This is a common claim among illegal alien advocates, which is ironic given that all illegal aliens by definition are lawbreakers.
These advocates might grudgingly concede this point, while replying that it does apply to crimes against persons and property. It’s hard to know for sure, however, because few U.S. jurisdictions keep comprehensive records of illegal alien crime.
One exception is the Texas Department of Public Safety, and illegal alien advocates often cite it to claim that illegal aliens are less crime-prone than U.S. citizens. As an example, its records for arrests show a 2.7 per 100,000 homicide rate for illegals in Texas, compared with a rate of 3.0 for citizens.
But these statistics are misleading, notes Wid Layman of Border Hawk News, because [M]any illegal immigrants are not identified until much later, and their immigration status is not known or released during their initial arrest. The data indicates that once ALL the information is collected, the true number is 3.9 per 100,00, which is higher than the state average.”
In any case, if we had more effective border and interior control, there would be fewer illegal aliens in this country, and therefore fewer crimes committed by them. A case in point involves Laken Riley the Georgia nursing student allegedly murdered by an illegal alien from Venezuela. Her alleged assailant was allowed to enter and remain in the U.S. under the Biden Administration illegal parole program. Subsequently, he was arrested for crimes in New York City, but was released because of that city’s sanctuary policy.
If we had applied our laws to this individual, one can reasonably speculate that that Laken Riley would still be alive.
