Nearly 500 local and state elected officials have called on the Biden Administration to admit 2.4 million refugees to fill jobs in the United States. They also want the federal government to “double down on the investment of resources necessary to build a robust resettlement program [for the refugees].”
This proposal amounts to a taxpayer subsidy for businesses seeking cheap labor from refugee workers. Along with the funds for resettlement, refugees over their lifetimes typically receive more in welfare and other tax-paid benefits than they pay in taxes. One reason is that refugees, unlike other immigrants, are can qualify for welfare as soon as they arrive.
Aside from businesses, various “charities” profiteer from refugee resettlement. Typically they receive government subsidies for placing refugees in American communities. Then they depart, and leave the tab for the refugees’ public assistance for those communities to pick up.
If the administration complies with the request of these officials, it will mean more unemployment and lower wages for American workers. During the Biden Administration employment for immigrants has increased while employment of native-born Americans has declined.
