Two New York City Council members, Democrat Robert Holden and Republican Joe Borelli, are proposing legislation to end the city’s sanctuary policy, which prohibits its employees from cooperating with federal efforts to detain and deport illegal aliens.
Holden observed that “Sanctuary city laws put all New Yorkers, both immigrants and longtime residents, in danger by preventing the NYPD and DOC from working with ICE. We do not need to import criminals. . . . We must repeal these laws immediately.”
Ending sanctuary will face strong opposition from the Council’s Democrat majority. But they could be swayed by the view of Mayor Adam Adams that at least come some changes to the law are advisable. He has stated that illegal aliens “suspected” of “serious crimes” should be handed over to federal authorities.
The proposals to modify or end sanctuary come as New York City has faced considerable financial stress to provide services to its large and growing population of illegal aliens.
