Nearing Election Time, “Safe Third” Reappears

During the Trump administration, in an effort to stem the constant illegal alien traffic up from the “Northern Triangle,” President Trump instituted a policy derived from international law called “Safe Third.” Basically, that policy requires the asylum-seeking migrant leaving his home country to apply for asylum in the first “safe” country he passes through.

Last February, in a frenzy to stamp out all things Trump, the Biden administration cancelled those “safe third” agreements with El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

On Tuesday of this week, however, sensing that the American electorate is unhappy with the current administration’s open-borders policies and realizing that next year is an election year, the administration has floated the idea of reinstating Safe Third, to the accompaniment of howls of anger from the left.

The move is intended to head off the long-anticipated surge of illegals expected to result from the cancellation of Title 42, currently scheduled for May 11.

Leftist groups such as the ACLU are already gearing up to sue the administration if the proposed resumption of Safe Third actually occurs, which is in some doubt. A thirty-day “public comment” period must happen first, and officials were quick to clear the way for backtracking if the leftist howls grow louder. According to ABC News:

Administration officials say the finalized rule may be different than what they have proposed after it is subjected to a 30-day public comment period.
