Most Want Less Immigration

The Quote Below—More Misinformation from the Media

“Few things could solve so many of the country’s serious dilemmas as would meaningful immigration reform.

“Likewise, few of the nation’s critical issues are so self-inflicted as is the way immigration has evolved over the past 20 years, from being a complicated challenge into becoming a global nightmare.

“Americans have no one to blame but our leaders. . . . We have continued to elect heartless, bigoted leaders who prey on fearful Americans, creating untold problems and misery, either out of spite or for selfish, perceived gain.

“The vast majority of Americans immediately want the so-called DACA program implemented. A recent Gallup poll shows that 70% of Americans believe immigration is a “good thing’ for the nation. Two thirds of those polled want at least a sustained or increased number of immigrants allowed in.

The New Colossus, the epic poem written for and emblazoned on the Statue of Liberty, has made famous the words, ‘give us your tired, your poor’ because those words resonate not only on the principles of the nation itself, but on those who immigrate here as well.

“While people like former president Donald Trump infamously, and racistly, slur immigrants, the truth is that those motivated to come here primarily come for jobs. . . .

“Trump, as president, and complicit lawmakers, created an untenable quandary at the nation’s southern border, first by over-limiting the number of allowed immigrants, as well as creating unworkable policy for those trying to enter. . . .

“We benefit by having these immigrants and their families as neighbors and fellow workers. A path to citizenship creates a structure for model citizens.

“The fear of immigrants is based primarily on racism and xenophobia, behaviors that are anathema to peace and prosperity. . . .” — Congress Does Not Represent What Most Americans Want in Immigration Policy, Sentinel Colorado Editorial Board, Sentinel Colorado, 1/11/23  [Link]

Fact Check of Above Quote: This editorial promotes “immigration reform.” a deceptive phrase commonly used by immigration enthusiasts to mean amnesty for illegal aliens and increasing our already high level of legal immigration. The editorial, citing polls, claims that most Americans, support these goals. Actually, they don’t. A majority saying that immigration is a “good thing,” is meaningless without reference to the numbers and kinds of immigrants. It’s like saying “fire is a good thing,” without specifying whether the flame in question is a pleasant hearth fire, or a raging forest fire.

The polls showing that Americans want “at least a sustained or increased number of immigrants” are faulty because many Americans aren’t aware that our current level of legal immigration is so huge. A far better gauge of public opinion was a recent Rasmussen survey which informed its respondents (people who voted in the 2022 midterm elections) that legal immigration has averaged around one million immigrants annually “in recent years.” (Actually, it’s averaged that high for the past 30 years). Next the poll asked whether that number should increase or decrease.

Only 16 percent said it should increase, and another 10 percent said it should remain the same. Sixty-seven percent say the total should decrease to less than 750,000 annually. Fifty-three percent wanted less than 500,000, and 37 percent favor less than 250,000 per year. Another Rasmussen poll found that 51 percent of likely voters oppose amnesty.

The reason most Americans oppose mass immigration and amnesty is not “xenophobia” or any other of the bully-word slurs that immigration enthusiasts use to browbeat them. These Americans are huddled masses who are tired of their homeland turning into a country they can scarcely recognize as their own. They also are tired of cheap sentimentality about a poem which suggests that America can play the savior of all mankind.

Immigration enthusiasts manipulate sentiment to advance their primary agendas: cheap labor for Republicans and cheap votes for Democrats. Sadly, we keep electing “heartless and bigoted” politicians who support these agendas. Their rule is anathema to the “peace and prosperity” of our country.  ..
