Following the shooting two National Guard soldiers in in Washington D.C., the Trump Administration announced that it would pause asylum applications and visas for people from Afghanistan. The suspect in the shootings is 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national admitted to the U.S. under a program established by the Biden Administration.
Joseph Edlow, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said these steps would help ensure “that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible.” Data from the Department of Homeland Security reveal that almost 6,000 Afghans admitted under Biden were flagged for “national security” issues and “public safety” concerns.
