Residents of Chicago’s Latino community — known as the “Mexico of the Midwest” — claim their economy is shrinking as illegals either leave town or retreat to the shadows in response to stepped-up attempts by ICE to return them to their homelands.
A report by the Agence France-Press (AFP), published on Breitbart News, says that construction workers are not showing up for work and shops and restaurants are seeing a drop in clientele. As a result, according to the AFP, the overall city, whose population is 30 percent Hispanic, is experiencing an economic decline, aggravated by tariffs on Mexican-made goods the immigrants purchase.
How much of this is real and how much is fake is hard to say. AFP says that Latino residents in the city have formed the “Pilsen Defense Access group,” which patrols neighborhoods looking for evidence of ICE activities. An AFP reporter went along on a recent 90-minute patrol on the Lower West Side, which turned up no sightings. Also, yesterday, the Chicago Marathon passed through the same area, where locals came out of the shadows long enough to wave Mexican flags at the runners.
Whatever the truth is, no city and no country can make a law-abiding society and economy off of illegal activity. Those with no right to live here need to leave.
