Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposes that the United States legally admit between 600,000 and 800,000 Mexican and Central American workers each year. He claims that we need this influx “to produce, to grow.” He made no comment on how such a policy might impact American workers. One reason to doubt the claim that we need more workers is that automation in the next decade will replace people in a large percentage of jobs.
