Mexican drug cartels overwhelmingly are driving heroin consumption in the U.S., which is now at a record level, the State Department said in a recent report. An estimated 90 to 94 percent of all heroin consumed in the U.S. comes from Mexico.
FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday that the Mexican cartels have cut overhead costs by increasing heroin production in Mexico instead of relying on production in South America. The reduction in transportation costs has allowed traffickers to lower the price of heroin in the U.S., a factor in the growing rate of addiction here.
