Massachusetts Official “Incited Mob”

Illegal opposition to ICE’s round-up actions in Massachusetts is reaching a critical point. A week ago in Worcester, the city’s District Councilor Etel Haxhiaj attempted to prevent officials from arresting Ferreira de Oliveira, an illegal, criminal alien female wanted for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a pregnant woman. A group of about two dozen local residents, including Haxhiaj, surrounded the officers to prevent the arrest, and Haxhiaj assaulted Worcester police and federal law enforcement officers.

The Worcester Police Patrol Officers’ Union issued a statement about Haxhiaj’s role in the incident:

This councilor participated in the conduct of the unruly crowd and eventually assaulted both Worcester police and federal law enforcement officers on scene. Her behavior also emboldened others to act in this manner. The conduct of this anti-police activist councilor is deplorable and unacceptable. Regardless of political opinions or views, city officials should never condone the assault of an officer and flat-out disregard to the point of violent opposition, the authority of police to maintain safety and public order.

In response, Leah Foley, the US attorney for the District of Massachusetts, has threatened the arrest of anyone obstructing ICE arrests in the Commonwealth:

I will not stand idly by if any public official, public safety officer, organization or private citizen acts in a manner that criminally obstructs or impedes ICE operations. The United States Attorney’s Office, along with our federal partners, will investigate any violations of federal law and pursue charges that are warranted by such activity.

Although Haxhiaj was not arrested, Ashley Spring, a candidate for the Worcester School Board, was and is now facing multiple charges, including assault and battery on a police officer.
