The Secretary of Labor, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has sent a letter to state governors warning that states that give unemployment benefits to illegals will have their federal funding revoked.
The letter emphasizes that the Trump administration will not condone handouts to persons here illegally. Chavez-DeRemer writes:
To qualify for unemployment, one must be able and available to work, actively seeking work, and be legally authorized to accept employment in the United States. Unemployment benefits are not a handout for those in our country illegally.
The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) found in 2022 that sanctuary states like New York and Colorado had used the Covid epidemic to begin unemployment benefits to illegal aliens. In addition, California has “routinely attempted to pass legislation that would provide jobless illegal aliens with a right to unemployment benefits.” More recently, DOGE has discovered that some migrants receiving unemployment benefits were not only here illegally but also had criminal records or were on the FBI’s Terrorist Watch List.
