Immigration Won’t Reverse U.S. Aging

A common talking point of immigration advocates is that we must have mass immigration to counteract the low birth rate of native-born Americans and prevent our society from growing too old and gray. One who expressed this view was Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush who stated that “Immigrants are more fertile” and are necessary to “rebuild the demographic pyramid.”

This view is wrong, as shown by a recent study by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) based on data from the Census Bureau. The CIS study noted that while the fertility level of immigration is higher than that of natives, it has sharply declined since 2008–much more sharply than the native rate. As a consequence of this trend, immigration is not going to have a significant impact on the aging of America.
