Immigrant Workers Decline

Preliminary Census data, analyzed by the Pew Center, show that the number of immigrant workers (legal and illegal) in the U.S. has declined by 1.4 million between January and the end of July. Immigration policies of the Trump Administration seem to be contributing to this trend.

Pew senior researcher Stephanie Kramer observed that “It’s unclear how much of the decline we’ve seen since January is due to voluntary departures to pursue other opportunities or avoid deportation, removals, underreporting or other technical issues. However, we don’t believe that the preliminary numbers indicating net-negative migration are so far off that the decline isn’t real.”

With immigrants leaving the workforce, job opportunities for native-born Americans will increase, while the wages those jobs will tend to rise.
