Illegals Being Returned Quickly to Prevent Virus Entry

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have told Breitbart Texas that they are quickly returning “nearly all” illegal aliens illegally crossing the border between ports of entry on both the southern and northern borders. The illegals are being returned to the country from which they crossed, i.e. either Mexico or Canada.

Contrary to the previous policy of holding illegal crossers for extended processing, they are now–to the “maximum extent feasible”–being returned quickly to the country from which they just came. The change is the direct result of an order issued by the CDC on March 20, titled “Order Suspending Introduction Of Persons From A Country Where A Communicable Disease Exists.” The new policy is intended to prevent the further introduction of the COVID-19 disease into the U.S. and will be applied to unaccompanied minors as well as adults.

As described by CBP officials, migrants now caught attempting to illegally enter the U.S. between ports of entry will first be medically screened according to CDC guidelines. Most will then be returned to the country from which they entered, regardless of their country of origin. In some limited cases, persons excepted from the order will be turned over to Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement officials for further processing.

Hector Garza, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, told Breitbart Texas that Border Patrol agents, after first seeing an increase in illegal crossings from Mexico following the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, are now seeing a decrease. “We are seeing much lower numbers of people crossing the border illegally,” he said. Most of those are Mexicans, though some OTM (Other Than Mexicans) are still being seen.

Next week, the March Southwest Border Migration Report will be released, which will show the actual numbers of March apprehensions.
