A man attempting to start a fire with what was described as a “flamethrower” (actually a blowtorch) near the Los Angeles fires and detained by local residents has turned out to be an illegal migrant from Mexico. The man, Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva, observed attempting to light discarded Christmas trees and debris, was chased and apprehended by residents of Woodland Hills last week. Sierra-Leyva was turned over to police, who held him on a violation of probation for an undisclosed offense.
ICE has requested a detainer pending his deportation, but authorities say California’s sanctuary laws may prevent him being removed. In addition, officials are signaling that there is currently insufficient evidence to levy an arson charge. Chances are, therefore, that he will simply be released again to commit more crimes against American citizenry.
