How Many Want to Come?

The current surge of illegal migrants on our southern border is well documented. The Border Patrol reported 104,000 apprehensions in February, and estimates for March suggest at least a 25 percent increase over that figure. And that’s just the number that were caught.

The “gotaways” are another story, and a murkier one. One agent told CIS that three-quarters of border crossing attempts are successful. An official of the National Border Patrol Council estimates there were 40,000 gotaways in one border sector this year alone. Official estimates for the current fiscal year (since October 1, 2020) are 118,000. So who knows?

What we do know is a LOT of people want to come here. Yesterday, Gallop chairman Jim Clifton announced a survey of 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean showing that 42 million want to come to the U.S. That follows a similar 2018 worldwide survey that indicated a whopping 158 million around the world would come here if they could.

That number is more than half of the current U.S. population and any sizable fraction of it would be demographic catastrophe for America. Yet, in the 2020 campaign, Joe Biden said, “This country can tolerate a heck of lot more people!” Well, 158 mill is a heck of a lot. You ready, Joe?
