House Passes Border Security Bill

The House on Thursday passed immigration legislation to thwart illegal immigration by a vote of 219 to 213. All Republicans, except two, voted for it, and all Democrats voted against the measure.

It authorizes completion of a border wall; steps to combat bogus asylum claims, including reinstatement of former President Trump’s Remain-in-Mexico policy; upgraded border technology; and increased use of the the E-Verify system, which enables employers to determine whether the people they want to hire are legal residents.

The bill has little chance of passing the Democrat-controlled Senate, and if it did President Biden has indicated he will veto it. House Republicans understood these obstacles but felt that the law would make an effective statement of their views and provide a clearly-stated alternative to the policies of the Biden Administration.
