Greece Denies Turkish Claim

Turkey claims that it has unleashed a migrant surge on Greece because European countries have not done enough to help Turkey take care of people fleeing warfare in Syria. Greece maintains that this is a claim made in bad faith because only four percent of the migrants are from Syria. According to the Greek government, 64 percent are from Afghanistan and 19 percent are from Pakistan. The rest are from a wide range of countries in Asia and Africa.

The Greeks have labeled the Turkish action an act of extortion. Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis affirmed that “Europe is not going to be blackmailed by Turkey” and that Greece has “every right to protect [its] sovereign borders.”
