In February, an alleged Tren de Aragua member, Venezuelan Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, was arrested along with other illegal aliens living in the home of Jose (Joel) Cano, a Doña Ana County, NM, magistrate judge. Use of the home had apparently been offered to Ortega-Lopez by Cano’s wife, after he was evicted in April 2024 from his El Paso apartment. Found along with Ortega-Lopez and his fellow-illegal roommates were four firearms belonging to the Canos. Social media evidence showed that he had enjoyed access to them during his stay.
After Ortega-Lopez’s appearance in court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Damian L. Martinez, — who released him as a non-flight risk — Judge Cano submitted his resignation.
