Foreign Student Visas Limited to Four Years

Today, the Trump administration proposed a change to the regulations governing the length of student (and journalist) visas. Under the proposed change, foreign students will not be allowed to stay more than four years in this country on student visas. Journalists would be limited to 240 days, though extensions of 240 days will be possible. Chinese journalists are the exception: they will be admitted for only 90 days.

Accompanying the announcement, a DHS spokesman said:

For too long, past Administrations have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to remain in the U.S. virtually indefinitely, posing safety risks, costing untold amount of taxpayer dollars, and disadvantaging U.S. citizens. This new proposed rule would end that abuse once and for all by limiting the amount of time certain visa holders are allowed to remain in the U.S., easing the burden on the federal government to properly oversee foreign students and their history.

The move on student visas contrasts with remarks made by Trump earlier this week, when he mused that up to 600,000 visas for Chinese students might be acceptable, citing many US universities’ dependence on foreign tuitions. Those comments have drawn rare criticism from conservatives.
