Last year Florida passed a law to discourage illegal aliens from using public services. One of its provisions was having hospitals ask patients about their immigration status. It appears that this requirement has significantly discouraged illegal aliens from taking advantage of services provided by Medicaid.
In the fiscal year before passage of the law, $148.4 million in state and federal Medicaid dollars went to provide health care for illegal aliens. As of May, with two months remaining in the fiscal year following passage of the legislation, the total declined to $67 million. Though that sum will increase by the end of this fiscal year, the saving from the previous year will still be significant.
