Florida Fights Back

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is escalating his war with Washington on immigration, announcing last Friday a six-prong attack and following up the next day with a proposal to bus illegals out of Florida to Joe Biden’s Delaware or Martha’s Vineyard, where Barack Obama now lives.

Under the proposals announced Friday, the State of Florida will:

1. Ban state and local agencies from doing business with or providing benefits to any private-sector business or NGO that helps facilitate illegal immigration to Florida.

2. Ban state agencies from renewing state contracts with transportation companies, such as airlines and bus services, that facilitate illegal immigration to Florida.

3. Require private-sector businesses and NGOs, who facilitate illegal immigration to Florida, to provide compensation to the state of Florida to cover all costs that fall on taxpayers.

4. Mandate county and local jails, as well as courts, to collect immigration status data at the time of a suspect’s arrest and conviction. The information would be reported to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

5. Ban Florida officials from providing any discretionary benefits to illegal aliens while state agencies and hospitals will be required to annually report taxpayer-funded expenses for illegal aliens.

6. Add the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity as an enforcer of E-Verify.

In addition, among DeSantis’s budget proposals to the state legislature, he included the following:

Illegal Immigration
The Freedom First Budget includes $8 million to implement a program to assist the state’s efforts to protect against harms resulting from illegal immigration, and may include the transport of unauthorized aliens located within the state to other states within the United States of America, or the District of Columbia. [Emphasis Added}

Commenting on that provision in a press conference on Saturday, DeSantis said:

In yesterday’s budget, I put in $8 million for us to be able to transport people here illegally out of the state of Florida. It’s somewhat tongue in cheek, but it is true, if you sent them to Delaware or Martha’s Vineyard or some of these places, that border would be secure the next day.

Florida is currently home to at least 775,000 illegal aliens. Only Texas and California have more.
