Fla House Candidates Support Moratorium on Legal Immigration

Historically, even restrictionist-minded politicians have concentrated on reducing or eliminating illegal immigration, while allowing business interests to indulge in the importation of legal workers to their hearts’ content.

That may be changing.

In an opinion piece disguised as news, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting today that some Florida candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives are calling for a moratorium on all immigration.

Laura Loomer, for example, whom the Sentinel terms a “far-right conservative activist,” is proposing a “10-year halt on immigration to the United States.” Quoting Loomer:

“We keep on outsourcing jobs and outsourcing educational opportunities who are then working at a much cheaper rate than American citizens.”

The paper also refers to state Rep. Anthony Sabatini and combat veteran Cory Mills, who have expressed support for an immigration moratorium in their respective House campaigns. According to the Sentinel, Sabatini wants to halve legal immigration from about 1 million people a year to 500,000 and then move to a “full-scale immigration moratorium.” They quote Mills as saying “it’s time for America to hit the pause button” on immigration.

The Sentinel notes that while legal immigration restriction hasn’t yet caught on in Congress, the idea has begun to be debated, citing moratorium legislation filed by both Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

As a loyal adherent to the party line, the Orlando Sentinel finds the idea of restricting guest workers, etc, anathema and charges that such a moratorium would be “a disaster for Florida.” Meanwhile, adding a million foreigners to our population each year, a majority of whom–along with their extended families–will be here to stay, is just, well, business as usual.
