Drudge’s main feature is a link to an article from the March 6 edition of the Wall Street Journal: “Record Immigration Surge at the Border.” In that piece, WSJ quotes Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan: “This situation is not sustainable. The system is well beyond capacity and remains at the breaking point.”
According to the CBP, last month more than 66,400 people were arrested while illegally crossing the border, making it the busiest February since 2008.
WSJ confirms our report of yesterday, that adults traveling with young children now make up the bulk (60 percent) of detainees, as asylum seekers have figured out that that gives them an excellent chance of being quickly released into the U.S.
In addition to the WSJ feature, today’s Drudge Report serves up the following links:
Illegal immigration at worst rate in decade… Washington Times article quoting Brian Hastings, chief of law enforcement operations of the Border Patrol: “We have four specific cases here recently that we’ve seen those family units used as a diversionary tactic. The word of mouth and social media quickly gets back to those in northern triangle countries: If you bring a child, you’ll be successful.”
Invasion intensifies… Conservative Review piece that quotes Mark Morgan, former Border Patrol chief, on the changing demographics of illegal border crossers: “Today, family units and unaccompanied minors seeking asylum account for more than 60 percent of those being apprehended. The essential difference is they are not removed! Through our country’s broken asylum laws and bad judicial precedent, this new demographic of illegal aliens are caught and released into cities throughout the country.”
Busloads… NPR report quoting Border Patrol agent Manuel Padilla: “The entire system right now is at full capacity. Actually, it’s overwhelmed.” Concludes with this warning: “Humanitarian groups and immigration authorities are bracing for even more migrants in the months ahead. The number of people crossing the border illegally typically crests in the spring, as temperatures warm.”
Will ‘surpass Obama Era’… Breitbart piece quoting Princeton Policy Advisors researcher Steven Kopits: Illegal immigration will reach “a phenomenal pace of acceleration” in 2019.
55 Illegals Transported to Hospitals Each Day… Another Breitbart report, this one quoting Chief Hastings (see above) concerning migrant health: “If the [current] trend continues, Border Patrol agents will refer 31,000 people for medical treatment this year.” This will add to the nearly 100 million dollars spent on migrant medical care over the last four years.
