Disquiet on the Northern Front

The US border with Canada, though long overshadowed by its opposite number to the south where illegal crossings are concerned, nevertheless continues to demonstrate the same degree of porousness. In particular, the Swanton Sector in the East shows no let-up in activity. So far this year, arrests there are up nearly 190 percent over the same period last year. Agents in the sector arrested more than 3,300 migrants in June alone, up more than 420 percent from last June. That was the largest number of migrant encounters for any month in the sector’s history. In May, the arrests were up 422 percent over the same month last year.

The arrests during the month of April exceeded the combined annual totals of Fiscal Year 21 and FY22. All told, since Biden took office in January 2021, agents have arrested more than 21,000 migrants in the sector — more than all the prior years combined dating back to FY 2003.

A Swanton official, Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia, revealed on social media that among the arrests were nationalities from the following countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Anguilla, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini (nee Swaziland), Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Liberia, Lithuania, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Romania, Russia. Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Syria, Taiwan, Togo, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

Migrant arrests in the Swanton Sector have risen exponentially during the Biden tenure. Don’t bet on them slowing down anytime soon.
