As noted here last week, the Department of Homeland Security has begun sending Venezuelan “asylum seekers” back to Mexico after illegally entering the U.S.
Over the weekend, about 60 of those thus deported staged a protest at the Brownsville, Texas, international port of entry. The men, who had chained themselves together and painted their hands white to suggest peaceful intent, attempted to re-enter the U.S. by crossing the bridge between Brownsville and the Mexican city of Matamoros. Mexican officials were unable to stop the group, but American border guards set up a barricade with barbed-wire, preventing their re-entry. The port of entry was closed for about five hours until the issue could be settled.
The protestors eventually relented and agreed to be transferred to Mexico City, where they will receive Mexican work permits and will still be allowed to apply for asylum in the U.S.
